My Five Senses by Aliki, the picture book cover standing on a small table

My Five Senses by Aliki is part of the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series, and it's one of our favorite ways to introduce the body to little kids. It's short, clear and full of everyday moments your child will recognize.

What it's about

A boy walks us through his five senses: seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching. For each one he shows what he notices with that part of his body, like seeing the moon, hearing a dog bark or touching a kitten. Near the end, he shows how he often uses more than one sense at a time.

Why we like it

The words are simple and repeat, so kids can join in. Aliki's friendly pictures show real things children see every day. It also turns into an instant activity: after reading, your child can go test each sense around the house.

How to read it with your little one

  • Point to each body part as it comes up: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, hands.

  • After each page, ask, "What can YOU see right now? What can you hear?"

  • Try a senses walk after reading: find one thing to smell, one to touch and one to listen to.
