Book Review: Pick a Pumpkin by Patricia Toht

Updated: 4 hours ago

Pick a Pumpkin by Patricia Toht, with pictures by Jarvis, follows a family on a trip to the pumpkin patch. They pick the perfect pumpkin, take it home and scoop it out. The rhymes are bouncy and the pictures are full of fall color.
What it's about
A family heads to a pumpkin patch full of pumpkins: tall ones, squat ones, bumpy ones and smooth ones. Each child picks just the right one. At home, they scoop out the slippery insides and carve their pumpkins to share with friends and neighbors on a fall night.
Why we like it
It's a great book to read before or after a visit to a pumpkin patch. The words are fun to say out loud, and the pictures are cozy and warm. The pumpkin-scooping pages are a perfect match for today's lesson, What Is Inside a Pumpkin?
How to read it with your little one
Find the biggest pumpkin and the smallest pumpkin on each page.
Ask, "Which pumpkin would you pick? Why?"
Make a "squish, squish" sound when the family scoops out the pumpkin.
