Book Review: Five Little Pumpkins by Dan Yaccarino

Updated: 4 hours ago

Five Little Pumpkins by Dan Yaccarino brings the classic fall rhyme to life with bold, happy pictures. Five pumpkins sit on a gate, and one by one they say something new before they all roll out of sight. It's short, rhythmic and perfect for counting.
What it's about
Five little pumpkins are sitting on a gate. The first one says, "Oh my, it's getting late." Each pumpkin takes a turn talking about the night. Then the wind blows, the lights go out, and the five little pumpkins roll out of sight.
Why we like it
Many families already know this rhyme as a finger play, so kids can join in right away. The pumpkins have friendly faces and the colors are big and bright, so it's more silly than spooky. It's also an easy way to count from one to five.
How to read it with your little one
Hold up five fingers and put one down for each pumpkin as it talks.
Say "Whoosh!" together when the wind blows.
Roll your hands like rolling pumpkins at the very end.
