It's Pumpkin Day, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff, front cover

It's Pumpkin Day, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff, with pictures by Felicia Bond, stars the mouse from If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. Mouse paints faces on pumpkins, and each face shows a different feeling. It's a sweet, simple way to talk about emotions.

What it's about

It's Pumpkin Day, and Mouse has lots of pumpkins to decorate. He paints a happy face, then a sad one, a surprised one, a scared one and more. Each new pumpkin shows a new feeling. By the end, Mouse has a whole row of pumpkin faces.

Why we like it

Little ones are still learning the words for their feelings, and the pumpkin faces make those feelings easy to see. Kids who know the Mouse books will love seeing a familiar friend, and the short text makes it a quick, happy read.

How to read it with your little one

  • Make each face with your own face: "Can you look happy? Now surprised!"

  • Ask, "When do you feel sad? What helps you feel better?"

  • Count the pumpkins as Mouse paints them. Can you get to eight?

Good to know

  • Best for: ages 1–4

  • Read time: about 3 minutes

  • Pairs with: today's Fill It Up counting project and Jack-o'-Lantern Quesadilla snack
