Book Review: Walter's Wonderful Web by Tim Hopgood

Updated: 3 days ago

Walter's Wonderful Web by Tim Hopgood is a sweet first book about shapes. Walter the spider wants to build a web that won't blow away in the wind, so he tries a triangle, a square, a circle and more until he finds just the right one.
What it's about
Every time Walter spins a web, the wind blows it away. So he keeps trying. He makes a triangle web, then a square, a rectangle, a diamond and a circle. Each one is a little better, but the wind keeps winning. At last, Walter builds a web made of all his shapes together, and it's strong enough to stay.
Why we like it
It's a shape book with a story, so kids learn shape names without it feeling like a lesson. The bold, bright webs are easy for little eyes to read. And Walter shows that trying again is part of building anything.
How to read it with your little one
Trace each web shape with a finger and name it together.
Blow like the wind each time a web blows away: "Whoosh!"
Ask, "Which shape do you think will work best?"
