Book Review: The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle

Updated: 3 days ago

The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle is the perfect way to start spider week. A little spider spins her web all day long, even when the farm animals ask her to come and play. It's gentle, repetitive and made for small hands.
What it's about
Early one morning, a spider starts spinning a web on a fence post. One by one, the animals come by. The horse asks her to go for a ride, the cow asks her to eat some grass, and the dog asks her to chase a cat. The spider doesn't answer. She is very busy spinning her web. By the end of the day, her web is finished, and it comes in handy when a pesky fly buzzes by.
Why we like it
The web is raised on the page, so little fingers can feel it grow as the story goes on. The animal sounds repeat, so kids can join in on every page. And the spider is a wonderful example of sticking with a job until it's done.
How to read it with your little one
Make each animal's sound together: "Neigh! Moo! Woof!"
Trace the web with one finger on each page. Is it getting bigger?
Ask, "Why didn't the spider answer? What was she doing?"
