Dinosaur Roar! by Paul and Henrietta Stickland, the picture book cover standing on a small table

Dinosaur Roar! by Paul and Henrietta Stickland is a loud, happy book that begs to be read with big voices and small ones. It's a favorite with toddlers, and it's a sneaky lesson in opposites.

What it's about

Each page shows a pair of dinosaurs that are opposites: loud and quiet, big and small, fierce and gentle, fast and slow. The rhyming text is short and bouncy, and the ending brings all the dinosaurs together.

Why we like it

The dinosaurs are round, colorful and friendly-looking, not scary. The rhymes are easy to predict, so kids start "reading" along quickly. It's a great way to practice describing words, which is big language learning at this age.

How to read it with your little one

  • Use your voice: roar for the loud dinosaur and whisper for the quiet one.

  • Ask, "Which one is big? Which one is small?"

  • Act it out: stomp slowly, then run in place fast.

Good to know

  • Best for: ages 1–4

  • Read time: about 3 minutes

  • Pairs with: Thursday's How Big Were Dinosaurs? lesson
