Number 5 activities for toddlers: snack, play, book and free printable

Five is the easiest number to carry around, because it's right there on one hand. At ages 2 to 4 the goal isn't writing the number. It's counting five fingers, five toes and five of anything else, one touch at a time.

Here's everything we use for the number 5, all in one place. Pick one or two, or spread them across a week.

Talk about it

Illustration of the number 5 with an open hand, a foot, a star and a high five

Talk About It: The Number 5. The big idea: five means one more than four, and one whole hand. You'll find a few questions to ask and a one-minute way to show it.

Play

Dinosaur Mystery Dig, a project for toddlers from Sprocket & Sprout

  • Dinosaur Mystery Dig. Bury five toy dinosaurs in a bin of sand or rice. Your child digs, dusts and counts until every one is found.

  • Bowling Alley. Set up five numbered cups or bottles, roll the ball and count what falls.

Snack

Dinosaur dirt cup: a clear cup layered with pudding and crushed cookie "dirt" with a dinosaur cracker on top, next to two wooden toy dinosaurs

Dinosaur Dirt Cups. Our Number 5 day snack. Your child layers pudding and cookie "dirt" in a cup, then hides a dinosaur on top. Count the spoonfuls as you go.

Every child is different. Please use your own judgment about what's safe and right for your family.
