Book Review: Cold, Crunchy, Colorful: Using Our Senses by Jane Brocket

Updated: Oct 9

Cold, Crunchy, Colorful: Using Our Senses by Jane Brocket uses real, bright photographs to show all the ways we notice the world. It's a beautiful book for building your child's describing words.
What it's about
The book takes each sense in turn: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. For each one, it pairs clear photos of everyday things with simple words that describe them, like cold, crunchy, colorful, soft and loud. It encourages kids to notice what's around them and find the words to talk about it.
Why we like it
Real photos make it easy for little kids to connect the book to their own world. The describing words are the real gift. After reading, your child has new ways to say what they notice, which is a big step in language development.
How to read it with your little one
Point to a photo and ask, "What word would YOU use?"
Find something in your house that matches a page, like something cold, something crunchy or something soft.
Make up your own page. Take a photo of something and choose three words to describe it.
