Letter D Activities for Toddlers

Updated: 5 hours ago

D is a drumming sound. At ages 2 to 4 the goal isn't writing the letter. It's hearing the /d/ sound at the start of words like dog, duck and door, and feeling your tongue tap behind your top teeth.
Here's everything we use for Letter D, all in one place. Pick one or two, or spread them across a week.
Watch
Letter D with Sprocket & Sprout. The letter segment from Episode 4.
The Letter D song. A short song for singing the sound together.
Talk about it
Talk About It: The Letter D. The big idea: D says /d/, a sound you make by tapping your tongue behind your top teeth. You'll find a few questions to ask and a one-minute way to show it.
Snack
Letter D Snacks. Snack time is all about the /d/ sound, like dip. Your child dunks, dips and crunches, then builds a big D out of snacks before eating it.
Play
Water Paint. All you need is a cup of water and a brush. Your child paints letters on a fence, wall or path with plain water, then watches them disappear as they dry.

Every child is different. Please use your own judgment about what's safe and right for your family. Always supervise children during activities and while eating, and adjust foods for allergies, dietary needs and your child's age and chewing ability.
