Bear's Scare by Jacob Grant, front cover

Bear's Scare by Jacob Grant is a funny, gentle story about a tidy bear who is sure there's a spider in his house. It's a great pick for little ones who feel a bit unsure about spiders, and it ends with a new friendship.

What it's about

Bear likes everything in his house just so, and he does not like spiders. When he spots a cobweb, he's sure a spider is somewhere. He searches high and low, and in all the fuss, his favorite teddy bear gets hurt. In the end, it's a small spider who helps fix things, and Bear learns that spiders can be friends.

Why we like it

Bear's big feelings are silly, not scary, and kids love spotting the spider hiding on the pages before Bear does. The story is a kind way to talk about being nervous, and about giving new friends a chance.

How to read it with your little one

  • Hunt for the spider on every page: "Where is it hiding?"

  • Ask, "How does Bear feel? Have you ever felt that way?"

  • Talk about how the spider helped. That's a great lead-in to today's lesson!

Good to know

  • Best for: ages 2–6

  • Read time: about 5 minutes

  • Pairs with: today's Why Are Spiders Helpful? lesson
