The Little Red Hen by Jerry Pinkney, front cover

The Little Red Hen, retold and illustrated by Jerry Pinkney, is a classic farm story about helping, hard work and fresh bread. It's a lovely way to end farm week.

What it's about

A busy little red hen finds some seeds and asks her neighbors to help her plant them. The dog, the rat, the goat and the pig all say, "Not I!" So she plants the seeds, cuts the wheat, has it ground into flour and bakes a loaf of bread, all by herself. When it's time to eat, suddenly everyone wants to help.

Why we like it

The story repeats the same question and answer, so kids can guess what comes next and say it with you. Pinkney's detailed watercolors are full of feathers, fur and straw you can almost feel. The book also shows the whole path from seed to bread, one step at a time.

How to read it with your little one

  • Let your child say "Not I!" for each animal.

  • Ask, "Would you help the hen? What job would you do?"

  • Trace the steps together: seed, wheat, flour, bread.
