Ten Red Apples by Pat Hutchins, the picture book cover standing on a small table

Pat Hutchins wrote some of the most loved picture books for little kids, and Ten Red Apples is a perfect end to Apples week. It's a counting book, a farm book and a read-aloud that practically asks you to use silly voices.

What it's about

A farmer has ten red apples on his tree. One by one, a parade of farm animals comes by, and each one eats an apple, with its own animal sound. The apples count down from ten, page by page. The farmer and his wife are left wondering if there will be any apples left for them, and the story has a sweet ending.

Why we like it

It has everything toddlers love: animals, animal sounds, and a rhyme that repeats on every page so kids can join in after the first few. And there's real math in it. Every page shows one less apple, which makes "how many are left?" easy for little kids to see. The bright, bold illustrations make the apples easy to count.

How to read it with your little one

  • Count the apples on every page. Point to each one as you count.

  • Before you turn the page, ask, "How many apples will be left now?"

  • Make the animal sounds together. Let your child be the animals while you read the farmer.
