I Like Myself! by Karen Beaumont, front cover

If there's one book we'd want every kid to hear on repeat, it might be this one. I Like Myself!, written by Karen Beaumont and illustrated by David Catrow, is a joyful, rhyming shout of self-confidence.

What it's about

A little girl with wild, bouncy hair tells us everything she likes about herself: her eyes, her nose, her toes, her hair, her insides and her outsides. She likes herself when she's messy, when she's being silly, and even when other people call her names. No matter what, she decides, she likes being herself. Catrow's illustrations are big, loud and a little bit wacky, and they match her energy perfectly.

Why we like it

We love that this book gives kids words for feeling good about who they are. "I like me" is a simple idea, but hearing it in a catchy rhyme makes it stick. Our kids have been known to shout the refrain around the house.

It's also a great fit for All About Me week. It names so many body parts that you can point to each one as you read, which ties right into today's lesson.

How to read it with your little one

  • Point to each body part the girl mentions, then find it on your child.

  • Ask, "What do you like about you?" Write their answers down. You'll want to keep them.

  • Read the rhymes with big energy. This book is meant to be read loud.
