Farmyard Beat by Lindsey Craig, front cover

Farmyard Beat by Lindsey Craig, illustrated by Marc Brown, is a bedtime book that makes you want to get up and dance. It's short, bouncy and perfect for toddlers who love to move.

What it's about

The chicks can't sleep because they've got that beat. Their peeping wakes the sheep, and one by one more animals wake up and join in, until the whole farmyard is making noise. Then Farmer Sue comes out to see what is going on.

Why we like it

The words bounce like a song, with animal sounds that repeat so kids can join in. Marc Brown's pictures are cut-paper collages with bright colors and lots of texture, which makes this book a perfect match for today's collage project.

How to read it with your little one

  • Pat your knees to keep a steady beat while you read.

  • Let your child make each animal's sound.

  • Ask, "Who woke up next? Who do you think will wake up after that?"

Good to know

  • Best for: ages 1–4

  • Read time: about 3 minutes

  • Pairs with: today's Farm Landscape Collage and Friday's texture lesson
