Apple Farmer Annie by Monica Wellington, the picture book cover standing on a small table

Some books are about apples. This one is about the person who grows them. Apple Farmer Annie by Monica Wellington follows a busy farmer through her work, from the orchard all the way to the market.

What it's about

Annie grows apples. She picks them, counts them and sorts them. She uses some to make treats like applesauce, apple muffins, cakes and pies, and then she takes the best ones to sell at the farmers market in the city. The book also includes simple apple recipes you can try at home.

Why we like it

We love that it shows kids where their food comes from, and that it's a person's real job. Annie is calm, hardworking and clearly loves what she does. Wellington's bright, simple illustrations are full of little details, like rows of apples in every color, that toddlers love to point at. There's also a lot of natural counting and sorting built in, so it fits right into our math week.

How to read it with your little one

  • Count the apples on the pages where Annie is counting. Can your child count along?

  • Sort as you read: "Which apples are red? Which are green? Which are yellow?"

  • After reading, play "farmers market." Line up a few apples or toy food and take turns being Annie and the shopper.

Good to know

  • Best for: ages 2–5

  • Pairs with: Thursday's Homemade Applesauce (just like Annie makes)
