Book Review: Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin, Pie by Jill Esbaum

Updated: 4 hours ago

Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin, Pie by Jill Esbaum is a bright photo book that follows a pumpkin from a tiny seed all the way to the dinner table. Real photos and a few simple words on each page make it a great first science book for pumpkin week.
What it's about
A flat little seed goes into the ground. It sprouts, grows long vines and big leaves, and makes yellow flowers. Then the pumpkins grow, turn orange and are picked. The book ends with all the ways people enjoy pumpkins, from pumpkin patches to pie.
Why we like it
Toddlers love real photos, and these are big, close up and full of color. The words are short enough for little listeners, and the book shows the whole life cycle in an order that's easy to follow. It's a perfect match for this week's Pumpkin Life Cycle worksheet.
How to read it with your little one
Point to the seed, the sprout, the flower and the pumpkin, and name each one together.
Ask, "What do you think comes next?" before you turn each page.
Find something the same color as the pumpkins on the page.
