The big idea: Seven means one more than six: one whole hand and two more fingers.

We've counted up to 6. Today we add one more and get 7. Seven is five fingers on one hand plus two on the other. It's also how many days are in a week: count them from Monday to Sunday!

Questions to ask

  • "Can you show me five fingers? Now two more. How many is that?"

  • "Here are six crackers. If I add one more, how many now?"

  • "Can you tiptoe like a spider seven times?"

  • "How many days are in a week? Let's count them."

Show it in one minute

Line up seven small things, like spoons, blocks or toy cars, and touch each one as you count: "One, two, three, four, five, six, seven!" Then write a big 7 in the air together: "Straight across, then a long slide down."

Keep it going

Make it a seven count all day: seven steps to the door, seven bites of lunch and seven stars before bed. Spiders have eight legs, so ask, "Is seven enough legs for a spider? How many more do we need?"

A pumpkin has a hard outside, but what's inside? Under the skin, called the rind, is the thick orange part we eat, called the flesh. In the middle is the stringy pulp and lots and lots of seeds.

Talk About It: The Letter H

H is our eighth letter! It makes an /h/ sound at the start of words like horse, house, hat and honeydew. To make it, open your mouth and breathe out, like you're fogging up a window.
