Talk About It: The Number 6

Updated: Oct 11

The big idea: Six means one more than five: one whole hand and one more finger.
We've counted up to 5. Today we add one more and get 6. Six is the first number that needs two hands: all five fingers on one hand, plus one finger on the other. On the farm, six is easy to spot. Half a carton of eggs is six eggs!
Questions to ask
"Can you show me five fingers? Now one more. How many is that?"
"Here are five eggs. If the hen lays one more, how many now?"
"Can you moo six times? Can you hop six times?"
"How many eggs are in one row of the carton?"
Show it in one minute
Open an egg carton and count one row together: "One, two, three, four, five, six!" No carton? Count the cups in a muffin tin. Then write a big 6 in the air together: "Curve down and around, then curl into a little circle."

Keep it going
Make it a farm count all day: six animals in the barn, six crackers at snack and six big steps to the car.
