Talk About It: The Number 4

Updated: Oct 9

The big idea: Four means one more than three.
We've met 1, 2 and 3. Today we add one more and get 4. Four is easy to spot once you start looking: four legs on a dog, four wheels on a car and four corners on a square.
Questions to ask
"Can you show me four fingers?"
"How many legs does a dog have? A cat? A chair?"
"How many wheels are on our car?"
"Here are three blocks. If I add one more, how many now?"
"Can you find something with four corners?"
Show it in one minute
Line up three spoons and count them. Add one more: "One, two, three, four. Now there are four!" Then trace a big 4 in the air together: "Down, across, then one long line down."

Keep it going
Go on a four hunt around the house: chair legs, table legs, window panes and the sides of a book. Count each one to four.
