Illustration of the letter G with a goat, grapes, a gorilla and a guitar

The big idea: G says /g/, like goat.

G is our seventh letter! It makes a /g/ sound at the start of words like goat, grapes, gorilla and guitar. To make it, open your mouth a little and make the sound in the back of your throat: "Guh, guh, guh."

Questions to ask

  • "Can you say /g/ with me? Guh, guh, goat!"

  • "What sound does goat start with? What about grapes?"

  • "Can you think of a G word in our kitchen?"

  • "Does spider start with /g/? What sound does it start with?"

Show it in one minute

Write a big G on paper and trace it together: "Around like a C, then in and a little line across." Then hunt for G's on cereal boxes, signs and book covers.

Keep it going

Make it a G day: gallop like a goat, give a gentle hug, and say "good night" with a big /g/ at bedtime.

H is our eighth letter! It makes an /h/ sound at the start of words like horse, house, hat and honeydew. To make it, open your mouth and breathe out, like you're fogging up a window.
