Pop Count, a hands-on project from Sprocket & Sprout

Is there a better sound than popping bubble wrap? Today it becomes a counting game. You write numbers on a strip of bubble wrap, and your little one pops that many bubbles, counting (and listening) as they go.

What you'll need for Pop Count, pictured

What you need

  • A strip of bubble wrap (big bubbles are easiest for small fingers)

  • A permanent marker

  • Optional: tape to hold the strip to the table

How to do it

  1. Make the strip. Cut bubble wrap into a long strip. Divide it into sections and write a number in each one: 1, 2, 3, 4.

  2. Read the number. Point to the first section. "What number is this? Two!"

  3. Pop that many. Your child pops two bubbles in that section, counting out loud with each pop.

  4. Keep going. Move to the next number. Count every pop.

  5. Pop the rest. When all the numbers are done, let them stomp on the leftovers for a grand finale.

Why we love it

Kids hear, feel and count every pop, which connects the number to a real amount. Popping also builds finger strength for holding crayons and pencils later. It's the perfect ending to senses week: a touch, sound and math activity all in one.

Tips from our table

  • Start with 1 to 4 (it's Number 4 week!). Add bigger numbers when they're ready.

  • Some little fingers aren't strong enough yet. Show them how to squeeze with thumb and finger together.

  • Plastic is a suffocation risk. Stay close, and put the bubble wrap away when you're done.
