Cup Lift, a hands-on project from Sprocket & Sprout

What's hiding under the cups? Today we hide letter cards under upturned cups, and your little one lifts each one, says the letter and hunts for every E. It's a guessing game, a memory game and a letter game all in one.

What you need

How to do it

  1. Make the cards. Write E on three or four cards. Write other letters your child knows, like A, B, C and D, on the rest.

  2. Hide them. Put one card under each cup while your child covers their eyes.

  3. Lift and say. Your child lifts a cup and says the letter. "B! Not an E. Try again!"

  4. Find every E. Keep lifting until all the E cards are found. Each time, say an E word: egg, elephant, elf.

  5. Mix it up. Shuffle the cups and play again. Can they remember where the E's were?

Why we love it

Little kids learn letters best by seeing them again and again in a playful way. Lifting the cups adds a bit of surprise, and remembering where the E's were builds memory, too.

Tips from our table

  • Start with just 4 or 5 cups for two-year-olds.

  • Hide a toy dinosaur under one cup for a big "roar!" when it's found.

  • Older kids can say a word that starts with each letter they find.
