Rain by Manya Stojic, the picture book cover standing on a small table

Rain by Manya Stojic is a gorgeous picture book about animals on the African savanna who use their senses to know that rain is coming. It's a beautiful way to show kids that animals use their senses, just like we do.

What it's about

The land is hot and dry. One by one, the animals notice clues that rain is on its way. They smell it, see the lightning, hear the thunder and feel the first drops. When the rain finally comes, everything turns green and the animals enjoy it, until the land slowly dries again.

Why we like it

The paintings are big, bold and full of color, and the simple text is easy to follow. The story ties together everything we did this week, because each animal uses a different sense to find a clue.

How to read it with your little one

  • On each page, ask, "Which sense is this animal using?"

  • Make the sounds of the storm together: pitter-patter rain and big rumbling thunder.

  • Next time it rains, go to the window and use your senses: What can you smell, see and hear?
