Me and My Amazing Body by Joan Sweeney, the picture book cover standing on a small table

Me and My Amazing Body by Joan Sweeney, illustrated by Annette Cable, is a friendly first tour of what's inside us. It's told by a little girl who introduces her body one part at a time, in words small kids can follow.

What it's about

The girl starts with the outside, her skin, then moves inside to her bones, muscles, heart, lungs, brain and tummy. Each page explains in a sentence or two what that part does, like how her heart pumps blood and her lungs breathe in air. The cheerful pictures show each part in a way that's clear, not scary.

Why we like it

Little kids are curious about what's under their skin, and this book answers those questions simply. It gives you easy words to use when your child asks, "What's my heart doing?" It also fits perfectly with today's lesson on why our bodies need food and water.

How to read it with your little one

  • Feel along the way: press on your arm to feel bones, put a hand on your chest to feel your heartbeat, take a big breath together.

  • Ask, "Which part do you think is working hardest right now?"

  • Don't try to read it all at once. A few pages at a time is plenty for two-year-olds.

Good to know

  • Best for: ages 3–6 (read a few pages at a time for younger kids)

  • Read time: about 7 minutes

  • Pairs with: today's Brainy Yogurt Bowl and Friday's Bodies Grow and Change lesson
