I Hear a Pickle by Rachel Isadora, the picture book cover standing on a small table

With a title like that, how could we not start senses week here? I Hear a Pickle (and Smell, See, Touch, and Taste It, Too!) by Rachel Isadora is a bright, funny tour of the five senses through the everyday moments of young children.

What it's about

The book has a section for each sense. In each one, little kids share short, true-to-life moments: what they hear, smell, see, touch and taste. Some are sweet and some are silly, and they show that our senses can also tell us what we like and what we don't.

Why we like it

The sentences are short, so two-year-olds stay with it, and the kids in the pictures look and act like real toddlers. Isadora's illustrations are warm and full of different families. It's a great conversation starter, because every page makes your child want to say, "Me too!"

How to read it with your little one

  • After each section, try that sense together. Close your eyes and listen, or smell something in the kitchen.

  • Ask, "What do YOU like to touch? What don't you like to taste?"

  • Read it with a real pickle nearby. Can you hear it crunch?
