I Ain't Gonna Paint No More! by Karen Beaumont, front cover

If you want a book that gets your kids giggling and naming body parts, this is it. I Ain't Gonna Paint No More! by Karen Beaumont, illustrated by David Catrow, is sung to the tune of "It Ain't Gonna Rain No More," and it's impossible to read without singing.

What it's about

A little boy gets into the paint and his mama takes it away. He sneaks it back and paints his head, then his neck, then his chest, arms, hands, back and legs, working his way down to his feet. Each verse sets up a rhyme, and you turn the page to find out which body part is next.

Why we like it

It's silly, loud and full of color, and it quietly teaches body parts from head to toe. The rhymes are easy to guess, so kids start filling in the missing word after one or two reads. Catrow's wild, paint-splattered pictures are half the fun.

How to read it with your little one

  • Sing it! The tune does the work and kids learn it fast.

  • Pause before each page turn and let your child guess the rhyming body part.

  • Touch each body part on your child as the boy paints it: "Now he paints his... ARM!"
