Talk About It: Where Do I Live?

Updated: Oct 9

The big idea: I live in a home, on a street, in a town, in a state, in a country, on planet Earth.
This week has been all about me. Today we zoom out and talk about where "me" fits in the world. Toddlers won't memorize all of it, and that's fine. The goal is to start the idea that home is part of something bigger, and to begin learning a few key facts, like the name of your street or town.
Questions to ask
"What does our home look like? What color is our door?"
"Who lives in our home with you?"
"What's the name of our street? Our town?"
"What do we see when we walk outside our house?"
"Where is somewhere far away that we've visited, or that family lives?"
Show it in one minute
Draw a small circle and write "me" in it. Draw a bigger circle around it for "my home," then another for "my town," and keep going out to "Earth." Say each one together from the inside out.

Keep it going
On your next walk, point out landmarks: "There's the mailbox. There's the park." Older 3s and 4s can start practicing your street name and town, a first step toward learning their address.
