The big idea: F says /f/, like fish.

F is our sixth letter! It makes a soft, windy /f/ sound at the start of words like fish, frog, fox and farm. To make it, rest your top teeth on your bottom lip and blow.

Questions to ask

  • "What sound does fish start with?"

  • "Does farm start with /f/? Does cow?"

  • "Can you feel the air on your hand when you say /f/?"

  • "Can you think of an animal that starts with /f/?" (Fish, frog, fox!)

Show it in one minute

Hold your hand in front of your mouth and say /f/ together. Feel the air? Then draw a big F together: "One line down, then two lines across: top and middle."

Keep it going

Play "F or not F?" all day. Say a word, and your child gives a thumbs up if it starts with /f/: fish, sock, farm, banana, feather.

H is our eighth letter! It makes an /h/ sound at the start of words like horse, house, hat and honeydew. To make it, open your mouth and breathe out, like you're fogging up a window.
