The big idea: Wheels and machines help farmers move things that are too heavy to carry.

A farm is full of heavy things: hay bales, buckets of water, bags of feed and big pumpkins. Farmers can't carry it all in their arms, so they use helpers. A wheelbarrow rolls a heavy load on one wheel. A tractor pulls a wagon full of hay. Rolling is much easier than dragging!

Questions to ask

  • "What is something too heavy for you to carry?"

  • "How could we move it without lifting it?"

  • "What on a farm has wheels?"

  • "Which is easier: pushing a box or rolling a wagon?"

Show it in one minute

Fill a laundry basket with books and let your child try to push it across the floor. Then put the same books in a wagon, a stroller or a toy truck and roll them. Which was easier? That's why farmers love wheels.

Keep it going

Go on a wheel hunt around the house or the block and count every wheel you find. Then try this week's Farm Machine Match worksheet.

A pumpkin has a hard outside, but what's inside? Under the skin, called the rind, is the thick orange part we eat, called the flesh. In the middle is the stringy pulp and lots and lots of seeds.

Talk About It: The Letter H

H is our eighth letter! It makes an /h/ sound at the start of words like horse, house, hat and honeydew. To make it, open your mouth and breathe out, like you're fogging up a window.
